After decades of crafting high-end interior designs in the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., areas, Sanctuary Interior Design owner Hillary Summerbell is opening a studio in Lewes.

The shops in Bethesda, Md., and D.C. are stressful and boujie, said Summerbell, standing in her almost-complete space in the Five Points development. The concept for the studio in Lewes is way more relaxed, she said.

Located next to Edible Arrangements, Sanctuary Interior Designs is set to open with an open house Friday, July 16. Summerbell described the inventory style for her Lewes location as casual luxury, with high-end design.

“I want to keep it chill, but beautiful,” said Summerbell.

Summerbell has been doing interior design for more than 20 years and this will be the third location for Summerbell. She said she bought a house in Lewes after spending time in the Cape Region while working on a project for one of her Washington, D.C.-area clients.

“I just fell in love with the area,” she said.

Summerbell said her goal is to bring high-quality design into a home, while also not being stuffy about it. It’s someone’s home, so it’s got to feel comfortable, she said.

Summerbell said she has the ability to do the traditional turquoise and blue marine theme for a beach home, but her experience and connections allow for a wider range.

The blues are kind of feminine, said Summerbell. The collection offered at Sanctuary could translate well for a guy’s place, she said.

Summerbell said inventory comes from international market places – Greece, Mediterranean, Saint-Tropez, London and Paris.

“It’s all handpicked,” she said.

Summerbell is the owner, but she has a trio of women trained in interior design who will be working with clients – manager Ashley Riddle, Katelyn Rehmann and Phillipa Baker.

“I’m the owner, but it’s really a creative team,” she said.

Sanctuary Interior Design doesn’t just provide the furniture, rugs and design pieces, Summerbell said, she’ll also design a space while working from a contractor's blueprints, which means wallpaper, window treatments, paint colors and more.

“I’ve been in this business so long, there’s the ability to spec everything out,” said Summerbell.

The Sanctuary Interior Design studio will be flipped at least twice a year for new collections, said Summerbell. What’s in the studio is one hundredth of what they get their hands on, she said.

In-store hours for Sanctuary Interior Design are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. For more information, go to sanctuaryinteriordesigns.com, call 240-858-6948 or 302-313-5436 or email manager Ashley Riddle at ashley@sanctuaryinteriordesigns.com.
