DAR dedicates America 250 Patriot Marker in Dover

July 12, 2022

The Daughters of the American Revolution gathered June 25 to dedicate an America 250 Patriot Marker in Constitution Park in Dover. The marker was erected to honor the memory of the men and women who sacrificed so much during the American Revolution to achieve independence.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a service organization with genealogically based membership. Its mission is patriotism, education and historic preservation. The America 250 Patriot Project was established by the national society to honor the revolutionary patriots and raise awareness of their courage and conviction among current and future generations.

The National Society of the DAR hopes to place at least one such marker in each state before 2026, the 250th anniversary of the United States, in order to create a coast-to-coast network of markers. Members hope these markers will become a source of pride for local communities to celebrate the brave patriots who founded the nation.

It is vital to remember the country’s history and tell the stories of its past. The Delaware Blue line fought proudly as part of the Continental Army under George Washington and the five Delaware signers of the Constitution. A draft of the Constitution was penned in Delaware at the Golden Fleece Tavern in Dover.

The dedication of the America 250 Patriot Marker was conducted by DAR State Regent Dr. Gloria Lester with the assistance of DAR State Vice Regent Barbara Seningen and DAR State Chaplain Carolynn Foxwell. Joining Lester as speakers at the event were Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen and Delaware Heritage Commission Chair Dick Carter. Delaware Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long sent Anastasia Waryga to represent her office.

The First State Regiment color guard in their Revolutionary War uniforms presented and retired the colors. The ceremony concluded with “Taps,” played by Richard Johnson, Sons of the American Revolution chapter regent. Those in attendance included officers and members of the DAR, SAR and Children of the American Revolution.
