Cape district, Family Promise team up to address homelessness

The Cape Henlopen School District recently announced its partnership with Family Promise of Southern Delaware, a local organization working to prevent and end homelessness for families with children.

“We are very fortunate to have Family Promise as a partner in helping us address homelessness with students and their families who live in our district,” said Craig Warrington, Cape Henlopen School District homeless liaison. “As part of our federal COVID homeless relief grant, we are able to assist this nonprofit organization over the next three years, which will directly benefit families in our district who are in need.”

The local chapter is an affiliate of Family Promise, a national organization established in 1982 that works to prevent and eradicate homelessness in communities across the nation. Its four pillars are prevention, shelter diversion, sheltering and stabilization.

“Many of the resources in Delaware have stipulations on the populations they serve,” said Dale Smith, Family Promise of Southern Delaware board president. “Resources exist for homeless individuals, but not as much for entire families. At Family Promise, it’s our pledge to provide support to families with children, regardless of their size, makeup or composition. We are looking forward to partnering with Cape Henlopen School District to help families in our community attain the resources they need for lasting independence.”
