Charles Nelson Werner, proud veteran
Charles Nelson Werner of Lincoln passed away Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, at home with his family by his side. Most people called him Sonny or Chuck but he was also known as Dear Old Dad, Pops, Pop-pop, and Uncle Sonny.
He was born Aug. 22, 1948, in Baltimore, Md., to the late Samuel Sr. and Kathryn Werner.
At the age of 17, Sonny enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country for 17 years. After his military service, he became a police officer, where he served the citizens of Milford for 18.5 years. After leaving the police force, he became a long-distance tractor-trailer driver until he retired. Once he retired, he became active with VFW Blue Hen Post 6483 in Milford and American Legion CKRT Post 7 in Harrington, where he was a member and past commander. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Cootie and the Honor Degree of VFW. He drove many miles all over the country to attend Cootie conventions and spent countless hours driving veterans to and from appointments. His dedication to assisting veterans, military families, and the community was awe-inspiring. He put every person in his life before himself and always had quick-witted humor. He loved animals, especially his cats, and always said “God sees you through the eyes of an animal.”
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra L. Werner; children, Tricia Pollard (Jeremy), Ron Werner (Jeni); grandchildren, Zachary and Nicholas Pollard, and Dominic and Emilia Werner; great-grandson, Carter Pollard; sisters, Janice Brown, Dorothy Ford and Ruth Day (Chris); brother, Samuel Werner Jr.; sister-in-law, Susan Hinefelt (Keith); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Scott Werner and brother Ronald Werner.
Interment date and time are to be determined but will be held at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro. The Blue Hen VFW will host a luncheon afterward.
