Dewey Goes Pink and Gugie Run set Oct. 8

September 6, 2022

Dewey Beach will once again be awash in pink Saturday, Oct. 8, as The Starboard hosts its annual race and fundraiser for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Dewey Goes Pink and the Gugie Run.

The race starts promptly at 11 a.m., and the party goes on with delicious food from Bethany Blues, live music and a vibe that radiates throughout the town the entire weekend. There will be a ton of silly costumes, lots of smiles and laughter, and of course, the camaraderie of a fight that touches so many families across the United States.

In this 11th annual event, The Starboard will surpass the million-dollar mark in fundraising for the breast cancer coalition.

Steve “Monty” Montgomery said, “When Adam [Howard] and I started this event 11 years ago as a way to honor my mother and raise money for people fighting breast cancer in Delaware, we hoped it would catch on, but this is quite remarkable.”

If anyone knows how to throw events that bring a community together and fundraise in big ways, it’s Montgomery and his crew.

Parties with a purpose are a way of life at The Starboard, and this one is especially significant. Almost everyone in the massive crowd that swarms Dewey Beach has a connection to someone who has fought breast cancer or is a survivor. Last year, more than 3,200 people participated. This year’s event is selling fast, and just 3,500 tickets are available.

All of the money raised goes to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, an organization that helps people and their families fighting breast cancer in Delaware. Keeping all that money local, and directly benefiting the community, is of huge importance to Montgomery, and DBCC is an organization his mother believed in as well.

Crossing the million-dollar mark in fundraising for the organization brings an extra layer of revelry to this year, as the race becomes another one of the staples of the fall season in Dewey Beach.
