Canalside Inn finds summer staff with Green Beret Project

September 8, 2022

During the current labor shortage, Canalside Inn in Rehoboth Beach has been struggling to find an adequate housekeeping team to help keep the inn looking its best.

American Hotel & Lodging Association reported in June 2022 that 97% of surveyed hotels were reporting staffing shortages, with housekeeping being the biggest shortage of all.

A good cleaning staff is especially important in a post-pandemic world where matters of sanitation are critical. The Canalside Inn staff spent an extensive amount of time looking online through job-seeking sites and had absolutely no luck before finding a creative solution through the Green Beret Project.

The Green Beret Project is fighting to remove kids from the negative influences of poverty by giving at-risk youth opportunities after school and on weekends to learn work skills and responsibility. This program is a mentorship meant to expose young adults to new opportunities. In the Green Beret Project, youth are taught how to save money, be on time, and make themselves a healthy meal.

“As a small business, it has been difficult to find reliable housecleaners during our busiest season, especially since our beach help from J1 students has declined by record numbers. Green Beret helped us get through this busy season smoothly with great cleaning results for our guests. We are thankful for each person who has helped us this summer season,” said Kristen Deptula, Canalside Inn owner. “Canalside Inn formed a relationship with Green Beret Project in the past through landscaping work, and sought to work with them again, this time inside the walls of the inn. We are in support of the Green Beret mission, and we are grateful for the exceptional work they have done for us.”

With the mission to connect kids, cops and community, Green Beret Project founders want to break the cycle of school to prison by giving kids working and learning opportunities. One of the opportunities for kids to participate in is service projects. Those who show regular attendance and exemplify responsible behavior are asked to become leaders in the organization. With its network of partners, the Green Beret Project can align children with part-time jobs and apprenticeships.
