Patricia Anne Houchens, loved to dance

October 5, 2022

Patricia Anne Houchens, 54, of Dagsboro, transitioned from this life Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. She was born Monday, Nov. 15, 1967, to Mary Mitchell Washington.

While growing up, Pat enjoyed hanging out with her siblings and friends, going to parties, and hosting back-to-school BBQs that her mother would have, that she later in life held for her children. Pat loved theater, and opera in particular. She enjoyed opera so much that her mother Mary took her to an opera house to see if she’d be interested in participating in the activity. She was until she saw what they had to wear, which was big, puffy renaissance-style dresses. If you knew Pat, you knew that wasn’t her style. So, she moved on to gaining a love for dance, where she was known to cut a step or two.

Patricia received her early education at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School in Milton. The family relocated and then she attended Mount Pleasant Junior High and Concord High School in Wilmington. She then enrolled in Job Corps in Susquehanna, Md., where she picked up the trade of doing hair, finished her education and received her diploma.

Patricia was employed at Econo Lodge Inn & Suites in Rehoboth Beach, Best Western in Dewey, and her final job before illness was at the Dinner Bell Inn in Rehoboth Beach.

Patricia was joined in holy matrimony to James H. Robinson. They had four loving children and gained one bonus child whom she loved like she was her own. Patricia and Kevin Houchens have been together 24 years and had been married 14 years and 11 months, when she gained another bonus child whom she loved like she was her own.

In her leisure time, Patricia enjoyed cooking, cleaning, dancing, shopping, playing games such as Uno or Spades to name a couple, and watching Lifetime, The Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal. Pat loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren who were the light of her life. She was even crazy about her doggy granddaughter, Sunday. Pat had a smile that could light up a room. She was such a joy to be around and could keep you laughing.

Patricia was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Mary Mitchell Cook; and one grandson, Bryant Jr.

Patricia leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Kevin Houchens; four children, James Robinson, Bryant Robinson, Coreen Robinson and Trevine Robinson; two bonus children, Brianna Snead and Shanika Brittingham; her mother, Mary Elizabeth Washington; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Albert and Ben Mitchell; one sister, Carolyn Mitchell; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 15, at Friendship Baptist Church, 500 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lewes. Family and friends may visit two hours prior to service.
