You’re judged by the company you keep

October 18, 2022

I read that an upstate senator is hosting a fundraiser down here in the 6th District for herself. This senator, Sen. Kyle Evans Gay, is introducing her special guests, candidates Russ Huxtable and Estelle Parker Selby. We all have heard the phrase “You’re judged by the company you keep.” Well, if Estelle and Russ are going to be following the lead of the senator from New Castle County, then we have a lot to worry about, especially if you are concerned about public safety.

This senator sponsored legislation (SB 149) to open personnel records of officers, further putting a target on the backs of our already-stretched and stressed police. This piece of legislation also created boards of individuals who know nothing of law enforcement to second-guess our first responders’ split-second decisions. Another piece of legislation she sponsored (SB 150) would have stripped protections put in place in the Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights for correctional officers.

We are at a critical time in the 6th Senatorial District. With the population growth, we are in need of more and better law enforcement professionals to step up. Sadly, bills such as this will only discourage individuals from applying for these positions, and I don’t blame them. Making a simple mistake, having my life and the life of my family turned upside down, and possibly losing my job, my pension and my family’s livelihood in this state is not a great selling point for retention or recruitment.

Your vote has consequences for the safety of you and your family. Now is the time to elect a proven leader who will work for the constituents in the 6th Senatorial District. Elect Steve Smyk Nov. 8 as your next senator in the 6th. Vote wisely!
