Norman Raines Elrod, government retiree

Norman Raines Elrod, 77, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, in Lewes, where he and his wife had relocated from Silver Spring, Md., in early August.

He was born Aug. 5, 1945, in Chicago, Ill., the younger son of Warrick Elgin Elrod Jr. and Nancy Raines Elrod. His father was a foreign service officer which took the family to post-war Germany and then Princeton, N.J., before settling in Washington, D.C., and suburban Maryland. He attended Sidwell Friends Upper School, graduating in 1968. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Earlham College in Indiana before going on to receive a master of philosophy and a Ph.D. in economics from George Washington University. Norman taught math and science at Georgetown Day School High School for four years. With a growing family, he left teaching to work at several agencies of the U.S. government including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Interstate Commerce Commission, International Trade Commission, and Central Intelligence Agency, retiring from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2011.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Warrick Elgin Warrick III (Rick), and daughter Laura Elizabeth Elrod. He is survived by his wife, Judy K. Elrod; sons, Norman Jr. (Amanda), Christopher and William (Nandita); former daughter-in-law Neide; grandchildren, Lennox, Leeroy, Ava, Ella, Eli and Beatrice; as well as several nieces and nephews; and former wife, Barbara Price Elrod.

A celebration of Norman’s life will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at Pilgrim Church, 2206 Briggs Road, Silver Spring, Md.  Private interment will take place at Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

Final care has been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
