Children’s Beach House to offer services in Milton

Grant to fund AmeriCorps service members
November 3, 2022

Children’s Beach House will soon begin offering services in Milton, and it has been named as an AmeriCorps service site.

With the grant awarded from the Corporation for National and Community Service, CBH will be able to host four AmeriCorps service members who will work with children in programs it will start operating in Milton.

“During our strategic planning process in 2021, our board of trustees was presented data that indicated there were children in Milton who could benefit from our services,” said Richard Garrett, CBH executive director. “We started reaching out to parents, educators, community leaders and other service organizations to see how we could best meet the community’s needs.”

After several months of planning and discussion, the nonprofit has developed a preliminary plan for two programs in the community. The first will be an extension of CBH’s existing youth development program which matches children in need of support with a family engagement coordinator who provides case management. The children will also participate in weekend and evening activities in Milton, weekend overnight enrichment programs at CBH’s Lewes Beach facility, and CBH summer camp.

The second offering will be a new before- and after-school program for children enrolled in the town’s two elementary schools. Before- and after-school care will be open to children enrolled in the Milton youth development program as well as those who are not enrolled.

Created for children whose parents must go to work early, the before-school program will provide a safe place for youngsters before they go to school. Activities will include reading, board games, creative play, arts and crafts, and group projects along with a nutritious morning snack.

The after-school program will fill the gap between school release time and when parents get done work. Activities will include homework assistance, theater, arts and crafts, games, recreational activities and field trips. Nutritious snacks will be provided.

During the school year, AmeriCorps members will help by providing support to 100 children at Milton Elementary and H.O. Brittingham Elementary schools. They will assist when children attend weekend overnight enrichment activities at CBH’s Lewes facility, and at youth development program activities and gatherings held in Milton during the week after school or on weekends.

AmeriCorps members will also assist at CBH’s planned before-school and after-school programs.

During the summer, AmeriCorps members will assist at CBH’s overnight camp in Lewes. Depending upon each member’s skills and interests, they will help with waterfront activities such as canoeing, kayaking and sailing, teach swimming or act as lifeguards, oversee the ropes course, help with arts and crafts, oversee sports and recreation activities, or help teach drama and music.
