A team of horses from Pairadice Equestrian in Milton hit the track at Pimlico Race Course Oct. 30 in a fundraising event to benefit retiring thoroughbreds.
Pairadice Equestrian owner and head trainer Camille Kierstead said she was excited to participate in Canter for the Cause for the first time at the home of the Preakness.
“We were able to ride on the same track where Seabiscuit, War Admiral and Secretariat ran,” said Kierstead, who brought her horse Hank to the event.
Joining Kierstead were riders Izzy Zigman on Jebediah, Lillian Ghabour on Ziggy, Kiersten Buhay on Chips Ahoy, and Simone Spoor on Good Prize.
About 300 riders signed up for this year’s event, sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance to help rehomed retired racehorses get a head start on a new career such as jumping or dressage.
“It’s a good cause,” Kierstead said, noting that her farm has taken in a few retired racehorses.
Participants had the chance to walk, trot, canter or gallop their horse or pony over the same track that has hosted racing legends and recent Triple Crown champions American Pharaoh and Justify.
With 15 horses in the schooling program, Pairadice Equestrian offers lessons, training and summer camps for new and experienced young and adult riders. Find them on Facebook.
