Sussex Academy hockey falls in Division II quarterfinals

Seahawks finish season with 11-5-1 record

The Sussex Academy field hockey team fell to the Archmere Auks 4-0 in the DIAA Division II quarterfinals Nov. 12 in Claymont. 

Archmere outshot the Seahawks 28-10, but Sussex Academy had a 10-9 advantage in penalty corners. 

Sussex Academy advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Saint Mark’s in the opening round Nov. 9.

Morgan Leeper scored twice for the Seahawks, while Meredith Schiff, Natalee Petty and Madison Jones each tallied one score. Callie Short and Petty were credited with an assist apiece.

The Seahawks outshot the Spartans 19-7 and held a 15-6 edge in penalty corners.

Spartans goalie Brianna Nichols made 10 saves, while Sussex Academy keeper Kaitlyn Musgrove stopped seven shots.

“I think the energy we came out with today was really strong,” said Petty.” We had the determination to keep going. It was big win for us going on in the tournament.”

“We came out really strong,” said coach Leah Hunsinger. “That just shows the intensity they have been building this week in practice. We were so ready for this game.”
