First Peoples of the Americas lecture set Dec. 6
The Lewes Public Library’s fall Science and Society lecture series will wrap up at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 6, with Dr. Jennifer Raff, professor of anthropology at the University of Kansas, in a live, online discussion of the origins of First Peoples of the Americas.
Raff’s bestselling book, “Origin: Genetic History of the Americas,” reveals the fascinating mystery of how humans migrated to the Americas. Many thousands of years ago, groups of people crossed what was then a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. Through the lenses of genetics and anthropology, Raff’s talk will explore who they were, when they arrived and how the first arrivals spread throughout the Americas.
Raff holds a dual doctorate in anthropology and genetics, and is a former president of the American Association of Anthropological Genetics. Her research focuses on ancient and modern DNA from the Americas. She has authored numerous scientific papers as well as pieces for The New York Times, Scientific American and Forbes.
The event will be moderated by Colin Norman, the former news editor at Science, and Fred Dylla, American Institute of Physics executive director emeritus and author of “Scientific Journeys.” Norman and Dylla are co-founders of the Science and Society lecture series along with Linda Dylla, former public information officer at the Jefferson Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy.
