January 9, 2023

The Cape unified basketball squad took a 30-24 season-opening victory over Milford Jan. 5 at the Cape gymnasium.

Zane Richardson led the Vikings with 12 points off four three-point shots. Alivia Heers and Declan Morrissey each scored four points, while Kayden Gibbs, Alex Shilves, Alejandro Alvarez-Roman, Jack Huss and Conor Pencek hit for a bucket each.“I was nervous to shoot,” said Richardson. “But once I was playing, it felt good.”

“I am so honored to be their coach with how they all played,” said coach Jenn Hagan. “The development of the program has grown. Half of the team is completely new to the program, and the way that they are chilling and working together to make this team so successful is just amazing to watch.”

Nathan Waydelis led the Bucs with 14 points. Nick Hurd garnered six, and Liberty Miller and Marcel Kellam each had a basket.

The Vikings take their 1-0 record to Middletown Tuesday, Jan. 10, to face the Cavs.
