Lewes man at The Citadel honored for academic achievement

The Citadel announced Jackson Handlin of Lewes was awarded a gold star in recognition of academic achievements during the spring 2022 semester. Gold stars are awarded to cadets and students at The Citadel who achieved a 3.7 grade point average or higher. Those who achieve gold star recognition are also placed on The Citadel dean's list.

Those cadets may wear gold stars on their uniforms throughout the semester following their academic achievement. A gold star recognition certificate is awarded to non-cadet students who meet the requirements; veteran and active-duty students are also awarded challenge coins.

Millsboro man recognized as LVC student-athlete

Penn Smith of Millsboro is one of more than 230 student-athletes who competed for the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen during the fall 2022 semester. Smith, a graduate of Sussex Central High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in computer science and mathematics and physics, and was a member of the men's cross country team and the  men's track and field team.

American Pen Women exhibit opening Jan. 15

The Holly Branch National League of American Pen Women will host a meet-and-greet event from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, at Dover Public Library, for the opening of its new exhibit, Pen Women and Friends. The event is free and open to the public, and will include an art exhibit, poetry reading and light refreshments. The National League of American Pen Women is a professional organization for women writers, artists, choreographers and composers, and those in the allied creative professions. Columbiettes set meet and greet Jan. 15

The James C. Burke Columbiettes will host a meet and greet at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, at Ocean Pointe Grill in the Long Neck Shopping Center. The Columbiettes are women of the Catholic faith doing good in the community. Members look forward to welcoming and introducing attendees to the organization, whether they are new to the area or have lived here for a while. UUSD service set Jan. 15

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an in-person and livestreamed service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, with the message, I Come Not to Praise King. The Rev. Heather Rion Starr said, “Challenged by the prophetic words of the Rev. Bill Jones, we will stretch ourselves to think beyond honoring the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, and consider what it really means to live into calls for civil rights in today’s 21st century world.” For more information, go to uussd.org.

Vietnam Veterans to meet Jan. 17

Vietnam Veterans of America, Sussex County Chapter 1105, will hold its monthly meeting, optional 50/50 raffle and luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, at American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro. Drum circle set Jan. 19
