In support of its mission to promote and advocate the preservation, interpretation and cultural enrichment of the Lewes region, the Lewes Historical Society is sponsoring its inaugural Historic Lewes Writing Contest.
The essay theme is Historic Lewes 1631-1962. Juniors and seniors attending Cape Henlopen High School are eligible to enter.
Entries must address a person, event or controversy that took place in Lewes between 1631 and 1962. Only original, unpublished work from a single author will be accepted.
The submission must be 1,000-1,500 words, and contain the author’s contact information and grade level. Entries must be double-spaced and submitted electronically to henry@historiclewes.org by Friday, March 31.
Essays will be evaluated by a panel of judges from the Lewes Historical Society and the Cape Gazette.
The first–prize winning essay will be published in the Lewes Historical Society’s Lewes History Journal and the Cape Gazette. The author will be awarded a certificate of achievement and a cash prize of $1,000. Second- and third-place essays will be published in the Lewes Historical Society newsletter, and each author will be awarded a certificate of achievement a cash prize of $500.
Lewes Historical Society Executive Director Andrew J. Lyter said, “Creating youth learning opportunities that foster a connection to our community history is a priority for LHS. We hope this inaugural event inspires our local high school students to explore our rich past filled with centuries of great stories.”
