Elks Lodge 2540 holds Hoop Shoot

Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 held its annual basketball Hoop Shoot Jan. 15 at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach. The event was for children ages 8 through 13. Prizes were provided to each participant, with winners advancing to district, state and regional competitions.

The 8-9-year-old girls’ group was won by Gia Scott with 9-of-25 shots.

The 10-11 girls’ group was won by Samantha Delp with 4-of-25, and second place went to Lilliana Mason with two baskets.

The 12-13 girls’ group was won by Mia Scott with 16-of-25, and second went to Aubree Duke with eight.

The 8-9 boys’ group was won by Gabe Wideman with 15-of-25, and second was taken by Rowan Kreitzer with four.

The 10-11 boys’ group was won by Vincent Gilbert with 16-of-25, and Thomas Bratben took second with eight.

The 12-13 boys’ group was won by Benjamin Hill with 22-of-25 and second went to Desean Morris with seven.

First-place winners will return to the Sussex Family YMCA Sunday, Feb. 5, for district competition.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
