The Cape Henlopen football team, its coaches, family and friends celebrated the 2022 season with a Jan. 21 banquet at Hyatt Place in Dewey Beach.
Vikings head football coach Mike Frederick from Philly followed his extended family to Cape Henlopen in 2022, closing a gap that spanned 48 years. Coach Mike was the night’s closer. His podium presence went from pregame to halftime of the Eagles game, spending the most time on the “just a few people I'd like to thank” portion of the program.
The Vikings were 4-6, losing winnable games to Salesianum, Appoquinimink and St. George’s. Cape instituted a separate freshman program in 2022, and the freshman and JV teams combined for a record of 11-5. Cape graduates 10 seniors: L.T. Messick, Keishawn Mansfield, Joe Coveleski, Ethan Felker, C.J. Fritchman, Nate Horn, Adam Callahan, Thomas Gibbs, Ryan Betins and Nate Sullivan.
“We will have over 100 athletes in the program next season,” Frederick said. “If anyone is talking about the head coach, they are missing the point of what we’re doing here. We all together are here to help the kids of Cape. And may I add, thanks for accepting my family into the greater family of Cape Henlopen.”
