Future Homemakers of America at Lewes High in 1963

March 21, 2023

Things have changed a lot in the last 60 years. At Lewes High School in 1963, a group of young women were members of Future Homemakers of America. Officers of the club included President Nancy Hopkins, Vice President Carol Barker, Secretary Shirley Long, Treasurer Dottie Hopkins, Historian Elaine McIlvaine and Parliamentarian Carolyn Palmer. The group that year sold cookbooks to raise funds. They also surveyed students to determine how many ate breakfast, hosted an Easter egg hunt on the beach for kindergarteners and made aprons for Stockley Hospital. According to a Wikipedia entry about Future Homemakers of America, the American Home Economics Association and Office of Education co-sponsored a national organization of high school clubs focused on home economics. The organization's name, creed, and motto were decided by the teenagers themselves. The Future Homemakers of America was founded at a convention in Chicago in 1945. The name was officially changed to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America in 1999. Delaware’s FCCLA is a career and technical student organization that functions as an integral part of the family and consumer sciences education curriculum, and operates within the school system. It provides opportunities for active student participation at local, state and national levels.
