Cape boys’ lacrosse stuns Episcopal 10-9 to open season

There is no revenge in high school lacrosse; every game is its own reckoning. 

Cape burst from the box March 21 at Episcopal Academy facing the No. 6-ranked team in the tri-state area, according to phillylacrosse.com. The Vikings were listed in the small print after the top 15 as “’also receiving votes.’’

Cape prevailed 10-9 when Mason Trench made his 12th save of the game with 12 seconds left on the clock. 

"You have to get out fast  and be confident against a good team like Episcopal,” said first-year head coach Geoff Shupard. “We stress that every day in practice – playing fast with intensity. We are always working to get to that level.”

The Vikings led 4-3 at the half with freshman goalie Mason Trench between the pipes. Jack Schell had a first-half hat trick. 

The lead increased to 7-3 on a goal from Jaden Cannon, with the score settling at 8-4 after three periods. 

“We have an incredible defense with long poles Jake Hutchison, Matt Leonhartt, Brody Smith and Andrew Wolak, and we have CJ Fritchman on face-offs,” said Shupard.

Cape went country “it’s fess-up time” holding off a fourth-quarter comeback by the Saints to win 10-9, taking the big yellow taxi south on the Blue Route with the upset  victory. 

Cape was led in scoring by Jack Schell (3-1), Luke Burton (2-2), Cody Trivits (1-2), Mike Guenther (1-1), and single goals by Jahden Cannon, Joe Coveleski, and CJ Fritchman. 

Fritchman also won 65 percent  of face-offs contested.

Cape was scheduled to play Sts. Peter and Paul March 23 at Champions Stadium.
