Some may feel that the occasional meeting at the Margaret Rollins Community Center in Lewes figuratively sucks the life out of them. On April 21, residents and city staff literally had their life force drained ... all for a good cause.
The City of Lewes hosted its first blood drive thanks to a partnership with the Blood Bank of Delmarva just ahead of the summer season to garner as many timely donations as possible.
Officials said the need for blood donations remains urgent and they are entering a critical time for blood donations. Unfortunately, accidents of all kinds increase in the summertime, particularly on roads, and this coincides with a number of people taking vacations during the warmer months. Some of those spending time outside of the area can be sources of a valuable resource – rare blood. Blood typed AB-negative and B-negative are the rarest types of blood, and blood banks rely on individuals with all types of blood, especially the rare types to maintain the supply.
The drive kicked off at 9 a.m. and before 3 p.m. rolled around, 51 people combined to donate 58 pints of blood. Joining residents in donating were members of city staff, employees and Lewes Board of Public Works.
More information about donating blood can be found at delmarvablood.org. The Dagsboro Donor Center, 32445 Royal Blvd., Clayton Crossing Shopping Center, is the only permanent location in Sussex County.
