Something hot and fresh has popped up in Dewey Beach, with the opening of the newest Sandy Pony Donuts just in time for summer.
Launched in a Chincoteague Island food truck by Brea and Ben Wang in 2015, the small regional chain offering made-to-order donuts now has brick-and-mortar locations in Annapolis, Md., and Bethany Beach. Childhood friend Geaton Decesaris heads up the Dewey location.
Classic choices such as glazed and raw, a naked donut, are offered along with a host of original specialty donuts with toppings like sugar and bacon, Oreos and pretzels.
Many speciality donuts, like the glaze and cinnamon sugar-flavored Ms. Sandy, are named after famous Chincoteague ponies, while others such as Chocolate Covered Pretzel, are self-explanatory, Decesaris said.
Donuts are available individually, by the half-dozen and dozen, and gluten free.
“We have hot donuts all the time,” Decesaris said. “When you order, your donut gets dropped. Nothing is pre-made except our edible cookie dough. It takes a couple minutes to fry, but you know what you’re getting and it’s worth the wait.”
The menu includes hot and iced brews and espresso shots from Rise Up Coffee, various açaí bowls, smoothies and flavored bubble tea.
“We started with just donuts, but we expanded as we had more space,” Decesaris said. “We like to offer something for everyone.”
Sandy Pony Donuts is at 1905 Coastal Highway, Dewey, in the space formerly occupied by Fat Vinny’s. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., seven days a week, with additional hours from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. After Labor Day, Sandy Pony Donuts will be open for major event weekends.
