July 7 will be known as Kitty T. Cole Day in Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach officials have announced that Friday, July 7, will be known as Kitty T. Cole Day in recognition of the longtime city resident’s 100th birthday.

During a commissioner meeting June 16, Mayor Stan Mills attempted to read the proclamation announcing the special day, but got emotional and handed over the duties to Commissioner Patrick Gossett, the board vice president. When Gossett finished reading the proclamation, Cole received a standing ovation.

Cole was born July 7, 1923, in Georgetown, but her dad moved the family to Rehoboth during her early years. She graduated from Rehoboth High School when it was on Rehoboth Avenue where city hall is today. Cole and her family have lived on Olive Avenue for more than 70 years.

The proclamation was a surprise for the delighted Cole, who, other than saying thank you with a big smile, was left generally speechless.

Her son George Cole, who served as a longtime member of Sussex County Council, said he told her Lake Gerar was on the meeting agenda, which drew a laugh from the audience because his mom often has an opinion on the health of the lake.

In addition to the proclamation, Mills said the city has dedicated a bench in her honor with an engraved plaque recognizing Cole’s life in the city.
