Albert John Smith, proud veteran
Albert John Smith, 82, of Milton, passed away at home Friday, June 30, 2023, while surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home. He was born Sept. 22, 1940, in Wilmington, son of the late Annie Morrow Smith and Richard Joseph McEnery Jr.
Al worked at the Chrysler Newark Assembly Plant, retiring after over 20 years on the assembly line. He had previously worked as an electrician for the City of Wilmington. Al served overseas with the U.S. Army combat engineers and the Allied Mobile Forces during the Cold War, participating in the 1958 Lebanon Crisis and other operations. He was a lifetime member of the 11th Ward Democratic Legion, as well as a member of American Legion Durney Post 27 and Broadkill VFW Post 6984.
In addition to his parents, Al is preceded in death by a brother, Carroll McEnery; and the Durham Family.
Al is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Smith of Milton; six children, Matthew S. Smith of Newark, Patrick M. Smith (Rebekah) of Cameron, N.C., Paula Nickerson of Lewes, Mary Anne Donato (John) of Callaway, Md., Brian Nickerson and Jamie Nickerson (Crystal), both of Milton. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 5, at Short Funeral Services Inc. chapel, 416 Federal St., Milton. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, July 6. A graveside service will immediately follow at 2 p.m., at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
