Lewes celebrates Fourth of July in 1993
The Cape Gazette hit newsstands on Memorial Day weekend in 1993. And since that time, our staff has been covering all the Fourth of July festivities in the Cape Region. Here are a few photographs taken in Lewes by co-founder Dennis Forney during the paper’s first summer. Not much has changed in the last 30 years, as the day still begins with Old-Fashioned Children’s Games, continues with the Independence Day Boat Parade in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and keeps going with the Doo-Dah Parade. In 1993, the day also included the Miss Lewes Harbour contest. Nowadays, an official fireworks show caps the day with a show off Savannah Beach in Delaware Bay. For many years, Lewes Beach residents took it upon themselves to set off fireworks all along the shoreline.
