Henlopen Grange No. 20 in Lewes presented its 35th Annual Community Citizen of the Year to Gloria Holland on Tuesday, April 17 at the Grange Hall. The Grange also recognized the service of Jane and Lowder Mitchell to Henlopen Grange and the community. The Mitchell’s started their Grange journey in January of 1965. Their leadership abilities and talents were quickly recognized. Each has served in many capacities and offices in Henlopen Grange #20, Pomona and Delaware State Granges. Jane was elected as a first female Master of the Delaware State Grange, serving eight years. One of her outstanding achievements during her term was enactment of the Farmland Preservation legislation. Jane was presented with the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women Award in 1992 for commitment to agriculture. The Mitchell’s were very instrumental in getting the FFA and Vo-Ag programs back in Cape Henlopen High School. They have operated Zwaanendael Farm for many years on Kings Highway on the southern edge of the Lewes community.
