Martin Caulk, July 28, 1942 – July 12, 2023

July 17, 2023

Martin “Marty” Caulk, July 28, 1942 – July 12, 2023,  was the son of Edwin and Mildred Caulk-Dement. He was born in 1942, in Washington, D.C. Martin graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Md., in 1960 and enrolled in the University of Maryland, College Park. He enjoyed college, got good grades, and made many lifelong friends.

Marty was invited to join the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he served as house manager and gained the trust and respect of his brothers. After graduation, he served for many years on the Delta House Corporation, serving as advisor to the undergraduates and liaison with the university.

Marty worked his way through college doing summer construction jobs, largely with home-building contractors. He enjoyed construction, was good at it, and learned many skills, which served him well. Marty bought several older properties, which he upgraded in his spare time, resided in several of them, and became a landlord when he moved on to his next project. He gradually acquired an extensive workshop and willingly helped many friends with their construction/repair projects. Marty became a good and trusted friend to many.

After his college graduation, he started a career with the U.S. government, serving in various systems and procedures functions in several agencies, each with growing responsibilities. Marty ended his active career as deputy inspector general at the National Security Agency, a very senior position. His technical knowledge and interpersonal skills were highly respected.

Outside of work, Marty loved spending summers at the beach. In the 1970s, he purchased a beach house in Rehoboth Beach, where he entertained friends for several decades.

Marty was also an athlete. He enjoyed playing tennis and was an avid skier who traveled to the American West, Canada and the European Alps. For over 10 years, Marty also treated friends to his timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

After his retirement from government service, Marty sold his Maryland properties and relocated his residence to his Pine Lane home in Rehoboth Beach. He entertained many guests and friends while living at the beach, and enjoyed the off-season after the summer crowds departed.

He recently became a member of the Dewey Beach Lions Club.

Marty is survived by his son, Daniel Haus-Caulk; his sister, Samantha Cherie Schryer; niece, Misha Britt Schryer; nephew Tien Vail Schryer; one cousin, Parris Caulk, and his longtime partner and caregiver, Marsha Burd.

Memorial service details for Marty will be announced at a later date.

Final care for Marty has been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
