Richard L. Sapp Sr., lifelong farmer
Richard L. Sapp Sr., 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 19, 2023. He and his wife of 62 years, Barbara, owned and operated the family farm growing vegetables and grains. During the off-season, he worked at Wilson’s Auction. He proudly served his country and state as a member of the National Guard, Governor’s Agriculture Advisory Council, Delaware State Farm Service Agency, Delaware and Sussex Farm Bureaus, and Delaware State Fair director. He was also a member of the Milton and Harrington Lions Clubs, First State Tractor Club, Harrington Alumni Class of 1958, which met monthly, and Zion United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Marie Sapp.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Jean Messick (Alan) and Richard Jr. (Michele); grandchildren, Ryan Messick (Emily), Jeremy Messick (Brittany), Trey Sapp (Jackie) and Lori Sapp; great-granddaughters, Peyton Sapp and Olivia Messick; along with numerous adopted neighborhood grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Tuesday, July 25, at Short Funeral Services chapel, 416 Federal St., Milton, where a time of visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Interment will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Milton.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to Delaware Farm Bureau Woman’s Committee Scholarship Fund, 3457 S DuPont Hwy., Camden DE 19934; or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford DE 19963.
