Encouraged by friends and admirers of her photographs of Broadkill Beach, budding photographer Maura McGuire has set up a small gallery at the Broadkill Store.
Called Moments by Maura, the gallery is the first time McGuire is selling her photos. She said she typically she gives her photographs as gifts, but people kept telling her she should sell them.
“I thought people who come here might be looking for something to remember their experience,” she said.
McGuire has visited Broadkill Beach with her husband, Mike Beauregard, for more than four decades. His family has had a place in the unincorporated bayside town for more than 50 years, she said.
“It’s just a little slice of heaven,” said McGuire.
The couple still lives in Connecticut, but they make it down to their family cottage as often as possible. She said during a July 25 interview at the Broadkill Store that this is the third time she’s visited this summer, she said.
McGuire said she hasn’t taken any formal classes on photography; she just gets out and takes photos as often as she can. The photographs tend to be of treasures she finds on the beach or of things in nature that catch her attention.
“The photos are mostly taken at sunrise,” said McGuire. “From 5:30 to 8 in the morning is my time of peace.”
McGuire said almost all of her photos are taken at Broadkill Beach, and she’s honored the store is willing to allow her to sell her photographs.
“I was a little nervous about asking, but they were excited to help,” said McGuire.
Professionally, McGuire spent nearly 40 years as a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing. She retired from that job two years ago.
“I just finished one career. Who knows, maybe I’ll have another,” said McGuire, laughing. “If not, I’ll have a lot of fun walking on the beach and taking photos.”
