Lewis L. Jobes, veteran, Sun Oil retiree
Lewis L. Jobes, 91, passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, after a short stay at the inpatient hospice unit in Wilmington. Lew has been a patient of hospice for the last 18 months receiving palliative care in his home. He died of asbestosis and congestive heart failure.
Lew was born June 27, 1932, in Havre de Grace, Md., to his mother, Ruth Evelyn Jobes and his father, James Carlton Jobes. He is preceded in death by both of his parents; his brother, James “Buddy” Jobes; and his sister, Janet Marie Walters. Lew is survived by his nieces and nephews, Phyllis Walters and her husband Tom Eastman, Cindy Winchester, and John Jobes and his wife Janet.
Lew served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from January 1953-February 1961. He earned the National Defense Service Medal for his service during the conflict.
He was a dedicated and loyal employee of the Sun Oil Company, where he worked as an insulator initially and then a draftsman. He served the Sun Oil Company for over 40 years.
Lew was loved deeply by all who knew him. He was a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church, where he served in the soup kitchen and Thrift Store.
Lew was an avid boater and fisherman throughout his life. He was a member of the YMCA in Rehoboth, where you could find him working out all the way up to his 90th birthday. He enjoyed running throughout his life, competing in multiple races, including marathons and half marathons. He will be greatly missed by those around him.
There will be a service held for Lew at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Conley’s United Methodist Church, with a luncheon. Interment will be at 2 p.m., at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro, with military honors.
