Richard Henry Baker, award-winning social worker

August 15, 2023

Richard Henry Baker, 71, of Georgetown, originally from Baltimore, Md., passed away surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Wright); his children, Samantha Baker, and Jesse Baker and his wife Amanda Baker (nee Ressin); and his adorable grandson, Dylan.

Richard was an award-winning social worker who quickly won accolades wherever he was employed. This included the Maryland School Psychologist Outstanding Educator Award in 2006. In 2007, he was honored to be named by the Maryland Chapter of National Association of Social Workers as School Social Worker of the Year. But it was his passion to address the needs of children and improve their lives with the inception of the Homewood Center (Howard County Public Schools). Through that, a new community for students was developed. The focus was on human values and creating a family atmosphere, where positive relationships were fundamental. His creed was "to start where the child is."

Richard was loved by the students and was affectionately known as "Baker." He always was a tireless advocate for students and always went beyond the call of duty. Richard was devoted to the students and staff at Homewood Center. As a reminder of Richard, always remember your local artists, musicians and poets, for it is they who keep us going.

Services are private.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Homewood Center, 10914 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042.
