Cape hockey ‘in a good place’ after first week of practice

August 21, 2023

Cape assistant field hockey coach Debbie Windett is a graduate of Bridgewater College with a degree in physical education. She snagged her degree before majors were offered in sports management. By her own admission, she is lost inside a supermarket. Debbie cooks like a football coach, which is not at all.

But when it comes to organizing a play day with 18 varsity and 10 JV teams, playing on four fields with games 25 minutes long, Coach Debbie has mad skills. Last Saturday’s play day included varsity teams Cape, Caesar Rodney, Charter, Delmar, Dover, Indian River, James Madison, Kent Island, Lake Forest, Milford, Good Counsel, Polytech, Queen Anne’s, St. Mary’s, Sussex Academy, Sussex Central, Sussex Tech and Wilmington Christian.

“I wait until the last moment to publish the schedule, because one late change by a school changes everything,” Windett said.

Cape hockey was changing up and mixing lineups and players the entire scrimmage. There are 23 players on the varsity roster and another 23 on junior varsity.

Coach Kate Austin said, “It was a really successful week for Cape hockey. The varsity is in a really good place at this point in the season, and the play day gave us a chance to see a lot of different combinations of players on the field, and looking at what positions are best for some players. We’re very athletic all over the field and it was good to see how we stack up against other teams. Some weaknesses were highlighted, so we can start working on making adjustments this week during practice.”

Cape has a Friday play day with just eight teams at 1:30 p.m., Aug. 25. The season opens for Cape Friday, Sept. 8, as the Vikings host Queen Anne’s County of Maryland.
