Wanda Canakis, creative and curious

August 25, 2023

Edith Wanda Canakis, 81, of Lewes passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2023. She was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late Enoch and Edith (Gable) Williams.

Wanda was swept away by the love of her life, George Canakis, and together they started their 63 years’ journey on a Valentine's elopement. They embarked on many creative projects together, from remodeling a historic mansion to owning an art and antique business. Wanda cultivated her husband's artistic abilities.

She pursued many creative endeavors, from entrepreneurship to her career in the food industry, always looking to enrich her life by learning.

Faith was a pillar in her life. She brought up her children in the love of the Lord. Wanda nurtured their abilities, lovingly supporting their slip-ups and successes. She propelled her children to higher education, teaching them to be gracious, genuine, always growing and goal oriented.

There was never a road trip she would turn down or an invite she would overlook. Wanda created art from scraps and feasts from tidbits. She excelled at making cards, jewelry, beaded pieces and pottery. A passionate gardener, her spent flower heads became next year's garden. Wanda lived a life fulfilled, never wasting a moment. She would sing “Amazing Grace” to any friend or stranger. Her curiosity was boundless, and her essence was cultivating growth, loyalty and kindness.

Wanda taught her children about forgiveness, patience and serving others. "Remember Who you serve," will never be forgotten. Her greatest love was her family. Time with them was what she cherished most. Wanda was most gently and lovingly cared for by the man she loved, and she was cherished by her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Wanda was predeceased by her sister, Janet Harriet Baker. She is survived by her beloved husband, George Canakis of Lewes; her children: Phoebe Canakis (Daniel Shultz) of Milton, and Philemon Canakis (Janell) of Lebanon, Pa.; her grandchildren: Alexander, Grant and Calla Canakis of Lebanon; her brothers: Enoch "Junior” Williams (Vivien) and Donald Williams; and her half-brother, Tom Civitello.
