Cape girls' lacrosse has never secured a bigger victory for the program, and it came from nowhere in a hurry as the Vikings trailed the Severn School 15-10 at home April 21 with just under three minutes left to play.
“I just told the kids not to let up. I didn’t want a pretty good game to get totally away from us,” coach P.J. Kesmodel said. “Jacki Coveleski, Erin Ricker and a few others looked right at me and said, 'There’s still time for us to win this thing.'”
Cape started to win draws and score quickly, and when Anna Frederick scored with 34 seconds left it was tied at 15.
The game went to sudden-death overtime and Sara Young, who was stupid good during the last second-half surge, scoring five goals on five shots, buried the game winner on a steep angle for a 16-15 Cape victory.
The win, added to a 12-8 win over 7-1 Sts. Peter and Paul April 19 on the Sabers' home field, propels Cape to a record of 7-0.
Goal scorers in the game were Sara Young with 7, Anna Frederick with 4, Jacki Coveleski 3 and Erin Ricker and Jordan Brown with one each.
Severn goals were socred by Allie Foard 5, Beth Willertz 3 and two goals each from Alexa Kunowski, Kelly Reese and Rachel Steinberg. Cami Whitford scored one goal for Severn.
“We go to Worcester on Wednesday, April 25 and they are undefeated, so it doesn’t get any easier,” Kesmodel said.
Last Thursday April 19 Cape defeated the Sabres of Saints Peter and Paul 12 to 8 in a game the Vikings led at halftime 7 to 4.
Goals were scored by Jackie Coveleski 3, Erin Ricker, Allie Yeager and Sarah Young each with 2 while Jordan brown, Kat Judge and Lexi Woodruff each scored one goal.
Anna Frederick had 2 assists while Karlyn Joseph had one. Gina Voss and Maggie Delp split the goal tending duties.
