Christopher L. Martin, avid fisherman, hunter

September 11, 2023

Captain Christopher (Chris) Lee Martin, 47, of Stuart, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday, July 24, 2023, just days before his 48th birthday.

Chris was born July 30, 1975, in Beebe Hospital, Lewes. At 13, he asked Capt. Billy Daisey if he could mate on the Sea Bronc II; it was there he fell in love with the sport of deep-sea fishing. He graduated in 1994 from Cape Henlopen High School and headed to Florida to start his career on the water. He fished in tournaments from New Jersey to Florida, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Panama, Bahamas, Bermuda and Venezuela, to name a few. In 2009, he won the Mid-Atlantic 500 in Ocean City, Md., coming in first place with the heaviest white marlin. He also took first place overall in Pirates Cove, N.C., Dave’s Harbor BBC’s, Bahamas, Challenge Cup, Ocean City, Stuart Light Tackle, Stuart, Fla., and Reels & Heels, Ocean City.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Donald and Margaret Sherow; and paternal grandparents, James and Joan Martin. He is survived by his daughter and proudest achievement, Logan (Tyler); mother, Suzanne Martin; sister, Nicole Lafreniere (Scott); ex-wife, Jerri Lyn Martin (Ricky), whom he remained close to; Jerry and Paula Owens, who thought of him as a son; and his fur baby, Luna who was always with him on and off the water. Christopher is also survived by his father, Donald Martin (Audrey); half-brothers, Brandon, Myles and Phillip; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, childhood friends, and lifelong fishing and hunting buddies.

Capt. Chris took the bridge for the last time on the Retribution, Harbor Isle, Fla., and will be with the Master of the Sea, where every day is a good day to fish!

A celebration of life will be held in the fall.

Thank you to Short’s Funeral Services, Milton for taking care of our loved one during this time.
