U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., recently took time from his busy fall schedule to tour two local tracts of land that Lewes residents are actively working to preserve.
Coons and his aides suggested potential sources of federal funding and voiced support for the project to preserve and reforest the 120 acres.
“Sussex County’s population is growing rapidly, and while it’s exciting to welcome so many people to our incredible state, efforts like those spearheaded by the Open Space Alliance and Lewes town officials to preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us are critical to maintaining a resilient ecosystem, said Coons. “A green Delaware is a healthy Delaware, and ensuring areas like the Lewes Open Space Project exist for our future generations should be a priority for everyone.”
Hosting the senator on his visit were Lewes Mayor Andrew Williams and Deputy Mayor Khalil Saliba; Joe Stewart, Greater Lewes Foundation chair; Jim Ford, Greater Lewes Foundation Open Space Alliance chair, and Mark Chura, Sussex County Land Trust executive director.
The GLF/OSA and SCLT are working as partners to raise $18.3 million to save 29 acres at the Fourth Street Preserve, and 89 acres at the Ard na Gréine preserve. Private donations are particularly important during the campaign’s first phase in 2023, to demonstrate community support.
