Crews pull sailboat off Lewes Beach
Mystic Wind sailboat owner John Grim breathed a sigh of relief as his 40-foot boat was towed off Lewes Beach around 6 p.m., Oct. 9.
Crews from TowBoatU.S. and Delaware Bay Launch Service worked most of the afternoon to free the boat, which ended up on the beach between New York and Delaware avenues after breaking free of its mooring in rough seas near Roosevelt Inlet around 2 p.m., Oct. 7.
TowBoatU.S. towed the sailboat to Angler’s Marina on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal with plans to lift it out of the water Oct. 10 to make repairs. Grim said there is some damage to the boat’s rudder.
Grim, who lives in Broken Arrow, Okla., has been living on his boat and cruising southern waters for the past four years. He took a cruise north for the first time to meet friends in Essex, Conn., before sailing to Lewes on his way south to Key West, Fla., and the Gulf of Mexico. He dropped anchor in Delaware Bay in front of the Lewes Yacht Club, where his anchor chain broke. He was not on board at the time.
