Lewes is embroiled in controversy two years after city officials named the two guarded beaches – Savannah Beach and Johnnie Walker Beach.
Beginning on social media a few weeks ago, many locals and frequent visitors say they were unaware the city took such action. While city officials didn’t actually change the name of Lewes Beach, many believe that is the case. Officials simply attached names to the areas that were referred to as Beach 1 and Beach 2.
This aerial photograph was made in 1972 highlighting the main guarded beach, formerly known as Beach 1, now known as Savannah Beach, at the end of Savannah Road. Little has changed with the parking lot in terms of layout and number of spaces, but the area around it is much more developed today. The beach itself has grown quite a bit too.
