Elks golf tournament raises funds for veterans

Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 held a charity golf tournament Oct. 4 to support funding for veterans in Delaware.

Last year, the Elks gave $10,000 to support veterans, and this year, they raised $13,000.

The day began with dew upon the green and a clear sky. Prior to opening ceremonies, the Elks veterans committee members presented a scholarship check of $1,000 to Canines Assisting Service Heroes, which was matched with another $1,000 of personal funds from Elk Karen Palmer. The CASH program provides deserving Delaware veterans with a loyal companion to help them with everyday life, and a veterinary care plan.

The opening ceremony began with bagpipes played by Lani Spahr wearing a Royal Stewart kilt. Announcements were made by Joy Schreck, exalted ruler; Kyle Deas, head golf professional; and Bob Trafton, Elks veterans committee chair.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Schreck singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the Rev. Jack Anderson, Elks chaplain, said a prayer. Announcements were made, the whistle was blown and the bagpipes played as the golfers proceeded to their starting holes.

There were 120 players competing for prizes totaling $900. These prizes were supplemented by a $10,000 hole-in-one prize on hole No. 2 sponsored by Megee Motors, and a $5,000 prize for the progressive putting contest, which required successfully sinking a 10-foot putt, a 30-foot putt, and finally a 50-foot putt, sponsored by McGregor Custom Homes. There were also three bonus holes with a $500 prize for a hole in one. There were no hole-in-one winners and no progressive putting contest winners, but, the challenges were there to add to the fun.

After play, participants progressed to the Elks lodge for lunch, golfing awards and raffles. Golf carts were sponsored by The Garage, and lunch was sponsored by Lebess Mechanical Corp.
