Charles E. Thompson III, devoted church member

November 20, 2023

Charles E. Thompson III, 73, of Lewes passed away after a long illness from pulmonary fibrosis Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, at his home surrounded by family in Lewes. He was born July 29, 1950, in Wilmington, son of the late Charles Thompson Jr. and Mildred Jones Thompson. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Randall and Kenneth Thompson.

Charlie was a 1968 graduate of Christiana High School and later received his associate degree in drafting and design at Delaware Tech. His entire career of expertise in industrial engineering included working for CVM Corporation in Wilmington and ILC in Frederica. After retirement he was not one to sit idle, so he continued his professional endeavors with many different companies, assisting in various projects.

Charlie was a devoted member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he had served on many committees including the Stained-Glass Refurbishment Project and as president of the trustees. He participated in mission trips with the church. He was also a current member of the Bethel Methodist Cemetery Board. Whenever he got the chance, he enjoyed going to the beach and watching his two favorite sports teams, the Phillies and Eagles.

However, above all, he treasured the time spent with his grandchildren, attending their many sports games, and working with them on special arts and crafts projects.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Beverly A. Thompson; his children, Mark Thompson, Michael Thompson (Megan), Shannon Ciconte (Nazzareno) and Daniel Thompson (Allison); 14 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his brothers-in-law, Robert Zych, Brian Zych (Michelle) and Blair Zych (Carly); and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W. 4th St., Lewes, where a viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow services at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Savannah Road, Lewes.

Floral expressions will be accepted; however, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church.
