Barbara Lee Petterson, instructor, talented artist
Barbara Lee Petterson, 89, of Lewes, passed away peacefully in her home Monday, Nov. 6, 2023.
Barbara was born April 14, 1934, in Bethesda, Md. She attended the University of Maryland and American University, and served as a craft director for the U.S. Army from the late 1950s through the mid-60s, which included stints in Germany and South Korea. In addition, she taught art at Marjorie Webster Junior College and was an instructor, content specialist and department chairman at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf at Gallaudet University.
In 1971, Barbara’s life changed forever when her cousin introduced her to a friend by the name of Robert Petterson. They were married a year later and from that point known to many as B and B.
Together, Barb and Bob, renovated and sold houses throughout the D.C. area until Barbara found an old mucilage brush factory in Lewes, where she already owned a home. Luckily, Bob was there to help her buy the factory, and for years they traveled back and forth between D.C. and Lewes working on houses.
In 1992, they made the move to Lewes permanent. Barbara (Fyock) flourished as an artist and enjoyed entertaining friends and family. She received numerous awards for her art and has many pieces in both private and corporate collections. When not creating her masterpieces, Barbara enjoyed traveling quite extensively, with her husband. She was always photographing their journeys, which were used as the models for many of her paintings. She also frequented the Lewes Yacht Club to volunteer on different committees, spend afternoons playing Maj Jong with friends, or grab a bite with Bob.
She is survived by her grandson Jordan and his wife Hannah; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Reese Petterson of Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lewes Yacht Club Foundation in memory of B and B.
