Athletes of the Week Dec. 15

December 15, 2023
Addison Bowman

Addison is the junior class president who is top 5% in her class taking honors, Advanced Placement and Academic Challenge classes, none of which gets her into the Athlete of the Week lineup. Addison won the pole vault Dec. 9 at the Alvernia Holiday Classic with a jump of 9-feet-6-inches. “I should have done better,” Addison said. “My best is 10 feet, and I’m hoping to clear 11 this spring.” Addison’s stepsister Keira Fletcher, a freshman, placed seventh in the event, while her stepbrother Bailey Fletcher was second in the boys’ pole vault. “We all train at the Philly jump club,” Addison said. “I’m a track athlete, and my sole event is the pole vault. It is fun and I love it.” Cape winter track traveled to the Worcester County Recreation Center Dec. 13 and will compete at Ursinus College at the UC Holiday High School Invitational this weekend in Collegeville, Pa.

Cale Baker

Wrestling at 113 pounds for Cape, Cale pinned Alex Starkey of Milford at 1:13 of the first period to give Cape a 12-0 lead after two bouts. The Vikings defeated a solid Milford team 47-22 in the first dual meet of the season. “It’s all about confidence with me,” Baker said. “Once I got the bar in, I was able to turn him for the pin. He’s a tough wrestler, but my confidence carried me to the win.” Coach Chris Mattioni: “Cale compiled a 21-20 freshman year record and qualified for the state tournament. He remained at 113 his sophomore year and has been working hard at practice. He went 3-2 at the Southern Slam and made it to the second day. He is wrestling with more confidence than he did a year ago. [Against Milford], he was aggressive, stayed in good position on the mat and was able to get a first-period pin. If his confidence continues to grow, he will have a great year and will be a big part to our team success.”

Amalia Fruchtman

Just a sophomore, this 6-foot forward on the Cape basketball squad has made quite the impression with her presence and ability on the hardwood. She led the state with 71 blocked shots last season, and she has started the new season on fire with 32 points, 17 rebounds and a block in just two games. "Amalia does things that make us all look at each other and say, ‘Did you see that?’" said coach Pat Woods. "She makes herself impossible to take out of the game. She is an amazing kid who joyfully accepts any task I give her, [from] jump ball to posting up to bringing the ball up the court to shooting threes to guarding the other team’s best player to getting the ball when it’s stuck between the rim and backboard. We put a lot of pressure on her, and she has handled it very well. We love her." In her spare time, she plays for the Under Armour Lady Sharks travel team and loves hanging out with her four little sisters.

Robert Redden

Robert is a Cape junior and versatile track athlete who has a personal goal to get better in a variety of events. At the Alvernia Holiday Classic Dec. 9, Robert placed second in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.59. The winning time of 8.47 was recorded by Lucas Band of West Chester. Robert came from an earlier heat. “I wish we had run together,” Robert said. “I know I could have gone faster.” Robert also ran on Cape’s 4-by-400 relay team with Ben Clifton, Cardin Benjamin and Jamar Beasley. Robert ran anchor; his split was 54 seconds, contributing to a cumulative time of 3:39.4 for third place. “Outdoors, I also run the 300 intermediates in low 40s and long jump over 20 feet,” he said. “And I want to move up and try the 800 meters.” Robert transferred into Cape from the Indian River School District. He used to play basketball, but gave it up to concentrate on his first love – track and field.
