Charles L. Spangle, retired Navy veteran
Charles L. “Chip” Spangle, 70, of Georgetown, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at Bayhealth Sussex Campus.
Chip was born into a military family on Mare Island Naval Base in California, son of the late John and Ava (Gill) Spangle. He would spend his life in service to our country and retired in 1991 with the rank of senior chief petty officer after 20 years in the U.S. Navy. After his service in the U.S. Navy, he worked as a correction officer for Delaware Department of Correction. Following a second retirement, he worked for a short time with Sun State Security.
Chip enjoyed being outdoors and doing yard work, especially being the household handyman. He also enjoyed watching western movies starring John Wayne and watching sports; especially cheering on the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens.
In addition to his parents, Chip is preceded in death by a brother, Jack A. Rush.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Pamela (Killinger) Spangle; two children, Jamison Spangle, and Mandi Elliott and husband Adam; two grandsons, Nathan Elliott and wife Samantha, and Justin Elliott; five siblings, Billy E. Rush, Michael J. Spangle, Shirley M. Spangle, Joyce M. Crouse and Eloise A. Markle; 10 nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and -nephews; and one great-great-niece; as well as a host of extended family.
Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to the SPCA or animal shelter of choice.
