Keystone State Ride seeks September cyclists

The Keystone State Riders will be biking in September from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia to raise cancer research funds for Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center.

The Keystone State Ride is a six-day bike event that averages 75 miles a day. After completing 400 miles, the riders head to Reading, Pa., for the Breakthrough Challenge event. The KSR event is being organized by Dave Wellborn of Lewes.

“I was inspired by the Empire State Ride, which is a seven-day ride from New York City to Buffalo, N.Y., to raise money for cancer research. The Empire State Ride has raised $10M in the last 10 years. I started thinking, ‘How can I bring an event like this to Penn Medicine?’ I really wanted to give back to Penn Medicine since I’m a three-time cancer survivor. What started as a crazy thought is looking more like a reality. We now have a website (KeystoneStateRide.com) and are starting to get corporate donors to help cover our costs, but we need riders,” said Wellborn.

All participant-raised funds will go directly to support investigators at Penn Medicine seeking the next breakthrough in cancer treatments. The Keystone State Ride is associated with the Breakthrough Challenge, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
