The Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball team outplayed Worcester Prep to a 51-17 win in the semifinals of the ESIAC tournament Feb. 14 in Georgetown. The Royals will host Sts. Peter & Paul Friday, Feb. 16, in the ESIAC championship game.

The Royals outscored the Mallards by 10 in the first quarter. The ball kept falling in the hoop in the second, as Delmarva Christian extended its lead to 21 at halftime. The Royals reached the running-clock threshold in the second half, outscoring the Mallards by 24 in the second half to garner the 51-17 win.

Journey Handy and Mia Elliott led the Royals with 10 points each. Evelyn Bohinski tallied eight. Layni Dukes and Bella Marinelli added six each, while Ryley McClusky scored five. Riley Barto and Josephine Peranteau scored three and two points, respectively.

“We started out slow tonight,” said McCluskey. “In practice, we really push ourselves, and we try to carry over that ferocity into the games.”

“I feel that if we come out with good energy against Sts. Peter & Paul we’ll be able to get out in front early,” said Peranteau. “We need to bring the intensity.”

“We need to apply pressure early with Sts. Peter & Paul on Friday,” said Royals coach Frank Roach. “We need to get into a rhythm of how we want the game to go. Tonight, we missed some things early. We missed some lay-ups and and some assignments defensively, but as the game went along, we did OK. Some moments we were overdribbling, but I wanted to get into moving the ball without dribbling. We were able to get some offensive sets in and see how they look for Friday and the playoffs.”

Anisaha Batra led the Mallards with eight points.
