Larry McBroom, voracious reader

February 28, 2024

Larry “John” McBroom of Laurel passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024. He was born Sept. 17, 1975, in Seaford, son of the late Larry and Frances (Watkins) McBroom.

After graduating from high school, he matriculated at Wilmington College, earning a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. He furthered his graduate education at California Lutheran University, earning a master of science degree in public administration.

Ever the consummate dreamer, John moved to California after college and began working at Wachovia Bank in the mortgage division, and also obtained his real estate license. After the 2008 housing crisis, John relocated back to his hometown of Laurel and began working for M&T Bank in the asset management department.

He was a great thinker and voracious reader who took a great interest in the world around him. He was also a sports aficionado, with his favorite teams being the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Eagles.

He will be joining his parents, and brothers, Mike and Richard, in heaven. Remembering and cherishing him always will be his brother, Wayne Isaiah McBroom; sisters, Renee’ DeShields, Laura Bach, Gena Hammond and Katie Hammond; an abundance of nieces and nephews; and his in-law, Bonnie Hammond.

A service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 1, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, with a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel, immediately following the service.
