Kenneth Clayton LeGates, Acme retiree
Kenneth “Kenny” Clayton LeGates, 78, of Millsboro, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024, at his home. He was born March 31, 1945, in Lewes, son of the late Dallas and Rebecca (Pippen) LeGates.
Kenny worked as a produce manager for Acme Supermarkets for over 36 years. Following retirement in 2000, he began working full time with his son’s business, LeGates Construction. After 15 dedicated years in construction, he opened his own lawncare company, which he loved. He was a hard worker and put his heart into everything he did.
In his spare time, you could find Kenny surf-fishing on the beach or trout fishing in the Broadkill River. His favorite time spent was with his son hunting. Throughout his life on the water and in the woods, Kenny developed two nicknames, “Trout Man” given to him by friends and fellow fishermen, and “Birdshot” from his brother, Harley. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lewes, American Legion Post 17, Lewes Moose Lodge, AMVETS Post 2, and Lewes Elks Lodge. Kenny was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Kenny is preceded in death by his brother, Harley LeGates. He is survived by his son, Kevin C. LeGates and his wife Kirsten of Milford; his grandson, Kristopher C. LeGates of Lewes; his siblings, Carol Sue Goldsmith of Perry Hall, Md., Sharon Beyer of Alva, Fla., and Dallas LeGates of Charleston, S.C.; and his former wife, Carol Cook of Lewes.
A celebration of Kenny's life will be held at a later date.
