Doris Irene Moore, retired teacher

April 10, 2024

Doris Irene Moore, 87, left behind this home for her eternal home in heaven Tuesday, April 9, 2024. She was born Dec. 13, 1936, to Graham and Ethia Perry Moore of Elizabeth City, N.C.

After having graduated from Weeksville High School, she continued her education at East Carolina University, earning her bachelor’s degree, and at Salisbury State University, earning her master’s degree. She completed courses at Mercer University in Macon, Ga., University of Delaware, and Delaware Technical and Community College. Following her chosen career, she taught in public schools for 32 years (31 ½ as a first-grade teacher), instilling in her students a love for reading and math. Her deep interest in reading led her to help write a manual for the state on programs for teaching reading. Having a music minor, she played for many weddings, choral groups and other events. She also taught private piano lessons. Her hobbies included music, reading, sports (especially basketball), and traveling (having visited 48 states, Mexico, Canada, Pacific islands, and Nova Scotia).

She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City, N.C.; helping people was one way of living her faith. She did so without recognition, which was very important to her.

Doris was preceded in death by the parents, Graham and Ethia Moore; brothers, Charles (Edith) and Herbert (Faye); and nephew, Larry. She is survived by her nephew, Wesley; and her nieces, Charlene and Martha.

Many thanks to her wonderful caregivers and helpers, Sharnett, nurse Paula, nurse Renee, Joanne, Rae and Sandy.

Internment will be in North Carolina at a later date.
