Girl Scout Troop 665 donates to Cape schools

Girl Scout Troop 665 members stopped by Lewes Elementary April 10 to drop off five baskets of nonperishable items and toiletries to be distributed to Cape district elementary schools for students in need.

Troop leader Jessica Sager said the girls worked hard to raise money through a successful cookie sales season and wanted to give back to the community.

“They voted on many different charitable options in the beginning of the year,” Sager said. “Helping the homeless and in need overwhelmingly won in their vote.”

Schools will be able to distribute the donated items at their discretion at either the end of this school year or the beginning of next year, Sager said.

“Our inspiration for this is our very own Love Creek Principal [Equetta] Jones, who bought a pair of sneakers for a student with her own money,” Sager said.

Scouts said they used $1,200 from their cookie sales profits to purchase new book bags, hygienic supplies, sneakers, socks and other items to be given to their classmates in need.

By bringing joy to students and relief to their families, students said they hope to inspire other people to donate to the schools’ clothing and supply closets.

The girls presented the donation at an administration meeting, where all school principals, assistant principals and district office personnel applauded, high-fived and hugged students for their efforts.

Assistant Superintendent Jenny Nauman told children she was proud of them, and that the items would be appreciated by their peers.

Troop members range in age from kindergarten to fifth grade and total 43 in number, including Daisy, Brownie and Junior levels, with the possibility of opening a cadette chapter next year, Sager said. The troop is based out of the Love Creek area and comprises girls from all five Cape elementary schools.

“Their hearts and desire to do good is noteworthy,” Sager said. “Hopefully, they can inspire others to also give to this cause.”
