Stanley J. Konkiel III, avid fisherman
Stanley John Konkiel III, 71, of Newark, passed away suddenly Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at his home in Milton.
Stanley was born in Bainbridge, Md., son of the late Stanley J. Konkiel Jr. and Joan Sullivan Konkiel. He grew up in Newark and attended Christiana High School.
Stanley proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. For many years following, he was a familiar face on Main Street, where he worked as a cobbler at Abbott's Shoe Repair. He later was employed by Fast Feet Shoe Repair in Wilmington.
He was an avid boater and fisherman, and a member of the Newark Anglers Association. Oftentimes you would catch him kissing the fish he caught before releasing them at Sunset Lake. Stanley was a diehard Eagles fan and could be found in front of a TV rooting for his team every football game. He also enjoyed soaking up the sun on the beach, going to classic car shows, playing the guitar, and spending time with his family, friends and his beloved dog, Dutch. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Stanley John Konkiel IV; and his brothers, Lyle Konkiel and John Konkiel. Stanley is survived by his wife, Brenda DeSanno of Newark; his daughters, Dawn Atkins of Wilmington, and Stephanie DeSanno of Bethesda, Md.; his sisters, Cheryl Porter (Frank) of New Castle, and Joan MacAteer (Mike) of Deltona, Fla.; and his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Committal Service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Stanley’s memory to the Disabled American Veterans organization, dav.org.
